Delivering the Four-Station Refurbishment Programme When Kelly Rail was engaged by Avanti West Coast for a major refurbishment programme across four key stations, Lancaster, Oxenholme, Stoke-on-Trent, and Wigan North Western, the finish line was already fixed. Aligned with the client’s financial year-end, all works had to be completed by 31st March 2026. While design work kicked off in November 2025, the teams faced an immediate hurdle: a four-week delay to site activity. To protect the customer experience during the busy Christmas travel period, Avanti moved the commencement date to 5th January 2026. This effectively stripped a month from the construction programme, pushing the teams to deliver a comprehensive upgrade in a significantly compressed window. The scope at Wigan North Western was wide, requiring a “surgical” approach to station facilities. Teams worked across multiple workstreams simultaneously, including: Comprehensive Upgrades • Mechanical & Plumbing: Full system upgrades. • Electrical: Modernising power and lighting. • Structural & Aesthetic: Joinery, flooring, tiling, drainage, and full internal decoration. Success Through Collaboration The project’s success turned on the close coordination between Kelly Rail and Avanti’s management. By addressing challenges swiftly through collaborative planning, the teams not only met the deadline but delivered a finished product that has transformed the passenger experience. “Without the hard work and commitment from the Kelly Rail teams, along with the excellent collaboration between Kelly Rail and Avanti teams, the project would not have succeeded. Well done and thank you Kelly Rail.” — Habeeb Adetona, Project Lead, Avanti West Coast 14. CONTRACT NEWS - KELLY RAIL
