b'SPECIAL RECOGNITIONLaura ElliotStepping All Over Cancer Laura is stepping all over cancer by challenging herself to complete 10,000 steps a day throughout March. Laura was brave enough to share her own story which inspired her fundraising.I had trouble speaking and was coughing a lot. I went to visit my doctor a couple of times initially prescribed me with an antibacterial throat spray. My neck started getting bigger and my throat got worse so went to see another doctor who thought I was suffering from enlarged thyroid. I was referred to the otolaryngologist (an ENT specialist) who requested a scan, biopsy and ultrasound test and they all came back fine. In July 2019 I needed to have surgery to remove my full thyroid - I was in surgery for 4 hours. It wasnt until September 2019, when I got an appointment for what I thought was a regular check-up. On that day I was told I had stage 2 cancer. In October I completed a radioactive iodine treatment to remove the cancer, I had to have this repeated in 2020 because the cancer was still there. My appointments were unfortunately cancelled in 2021 due the global pandemic. I managed to book an appointment in December 2021 where I was told my thyroglobulin levels have increased meaning I had to go for another CT scan in February this year. The scan shows masses in my glands which my oncologist is currently investigated but I am so thankful that the cancer has not spread anywhere else in my body.Fundraising is important for me because we need to beat cancer sooner, we need the funding and research into having better chances at survival.Thyroid cancer is a very treatable type of cancer and that is because of the research that has gone into ways to beat it. I have been told I am lucky that I have the good cancer because it can be treated, but nearly 3 years dealing with this cancer and living with it in my body is not lucky. Treatment is hard for everyone, mentally and physicallyfunding and research into making this easier on people also is important and much needed.Make a DonationMary Burke - Teenage Cancer Trust Fund raise Mary took on the 2800 squat challenge this Spring to raise important funds in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust. The charity is dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for young cancer patients aged 13-24. Fund-raisers donations are used to build specialist units in NHS hospitals and provide a dedicated staff, bringing young people together so they can be treated by teenage cancer experts in the best place for them. Kelly Group would like to congratulate Mary for her outstanding charity work as she raised 230 with her fundraising challenge, beating her set target by almost 100. I started my training early February with Nicholas Kelly and Simon Nash. They have both been great with their training techniques and interactions with us giving generous amount of time to learn from their experiences within the industry. They are great trainers and should be regarded as so.-Joshua S, Trainee FTTP EngineerThe Networker Spring 2022 9.'
