Kelly Group’s Fibre Engineers work in two men crews on the CityFibre contract due to the eight different installation methods we offer. The ‘One Team’ ethos is understood and followed by everyone who works on the CityFibre contract and it has a special meaning for engineers. The message comes from CityFibre expressing how Kelly Group engineers are an extension of their team – engineers might be working for Kelly Group but they are considered as part of City Fibre’s team which is represented by the support they provide for everyone involved.
The contract started in Milton Keynes where a traditional built, toby fed FTTP network can be found across the city. CityFibre engineers blow fibre from either the UG (Under Ground) or OG (Over Ground) network to the customer’s property.
One engineer from each crew is responsible for completing the job externally on the customer’s premises while the other engineer sets up the network internally.
As part of the Gigabit Britain Campaign launched by the government, we currently have engineers completing CityFibre installs in 40 cities Nationwide – from Scotland to Southampton.
Kelly Group is proud to introduce Shaun Adamson our skilled fibre engineer who is a great example of excellent engineers working on our CityFibre contract.
Shaun Adamson - North
“I started my journey with Kelly Group 5 years ago as an Overhead Operative working on the Openreach contract. When the opportunity occurred to join a new developing contract I was delighted to join the CityFibre crew as a Fibre Engineer completing residential installs.
Working on the BT Openreach and CityFibre contracts as an engineer is more or less the same. Except at the beginning, our engineers were not required to work overhead on the CityFibre contract.
Since I joined the contract at the very beginning my training journey was a lot different from recent trainees. I completed all theory courses with my local management team and developed skills working alongside experienced engineers. Since then the whole training journey has evolved and trainees now complete classroom training as well as practical training before they start working in the field. They also have a large support system available from management level to experienced engineers like me who will help trainees when they need advice.
I’ve gained extensive knowledge and practical skills throughout my journey with the Group, I was new to the industry when I initially joined, so gainign these new skills was a huge achivment for me. I improved my problem-solving skills and learnt a lot about the network by simply solving problems such as blockages on a trial and error basis. I also developed considerable knowledge by having experience working on both the BT Openreach network and the CityFibre network.
What makes our job interesting is the different challenges each installation brings. We need to pull cables either from the overhead network or from a toby box and depending on where the customer would like their connection introduced this can challenge our problem-solving skills. I genuinely enjoy working outside, especially during the summer.
CityFibre’s new full-fibre network is often the first fibre network customers have had installed into their properties. I get a sense of joy being able to make people happy by providing a reliable and fast internet connection upon completion.
I think the new Reward and Recognition Scheme is a brilliant initiative from our management team. When we’re recognised it gives engineers a sense of achievement. It motivates teams to all work towards the same goal while completing high-quality installs.”
