Joshua Bangert – Fibre Splicer
“I started my journey with Kelly Group almost 8 years ago as a Service Delivery Engineer working on our Openreach contract. 7 years later there was an opportunity available on our Community Fibre contract, to join as a Fibre Splicer and I was delighted to start my training journey to become a fully qualified fibre engineer. I had to upskill as an engineer, however, having 7 years of experience in the field was a great advantage as I had a good understanding of how the network works and its structure.
I trained at our Brimsdown facility with our national trainers and then spent time with fibre splicers, blowing teams and underground cabling crews, which was a great experience to understand how processes follow each other and what role each engineer has in building the network. Fibre Splicers are the end of the line, getting the network ready for customer installations.
Over the last year, I also gained experience as a fibre blower so occasionally, when it’s needed, I can step in to help complete this step of the network build.
Jobs are scheduled ahead of our working day and each day I could be working on a different step of our network build project. It all starts at the DJ (Distribution Joint), which is the main node feeding CMJs (Compact Multifunction Joint); these mini nodes then split and feed into poles in different directions. I have to be attentive while splicing on either point of the network because it is a live network, therefore requires focus and knowledge. Once the fibre is spliced at the top of the poles, Community Fibre’s installation team introduces the fibre connection into homes.
What I enjoy the most about my job is being outdoors and working as a network build engineer. Knowing that I contribute to making fibre available for homes and working on the project from scratch feels rewarding.
Compared to other contracts our team is much smaller, which has the benefit of us being able to support each other a lot more. We’re all working streets away from each other and we can always rely on each other for advice or equipment.
During my time with Kelly Group, I gained experience and knowledge. I was very young when I joined and didn’t see this opportunity as a career option, however the more time I spent learning and understanding the industry the more I started to see this as a lifelong career path, and I would like to continue to work as an engineer for as long as possible. I would also like to carry on learning, I started my career working with copper and progressed my knowledge now with the fibre field. There are always opportunities within Kelly Group as they continue to venture into innovative telecommunications solutions and I’m looking forward to learning new things in the future.”
Jordan O’Dwyer – Underground Cabling Engineer
“I joined Kelly Group about 2 years ago as a Civils Engineer working on our Openreach contract before joining the Community Fibre contract as a Test Rod and Rope Engineer 6 months ago.
As a Test Rod and Rope Engineer, my responsibilities include lifting pit lids, subducting with the correct size of cable that’s required as well as roping. For instance, today we will rod and rope from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’ and subduct according to a premade plan for the network. Rod and roping mean, using a cobra cable and roding from one section, creating a path throughout the duct, to then get the rope through and pull cables in. Sub ducting means the process of tying the cable to the rope, which helps us to pull it through to the outside. We’re the first in line who gets everything ready for our blowing team who are then followed by the splicing team.
What makes this job enjoyable for me is being able to work outside and the ability to see a lot of different areas as we move around according to job allocations.
Throughout my journey with The Group, I have gained various qualifications including confined space accreditation and civils manual handling through our Brimsdown training centre.
Once we started working on the field, it was nice to be able to rely our team, especially Adam Sargent who has been a huge support for us.
Since I joined Kelly Group, I gained a lot of experience and understanding of what’s involved with a network build project – there’s a lot more involved than people realise. We’re lucky to have a smaller project team which is great because we know each other very well and always have each other’s back when we come across tough situations.
What makes this contract different to my experience working on different contracts, is being able to set a goal for myself. Once we get the preplanned map, I am able to set small daily targets for myself and it motivates me throughout the week.”
Luke Greenfield – Underground Cabling Engineer
“I joined Kelly Group approximately 4 years ago as part of our civil gang then moved over to a contract where I completed civils jobs for flats rather than on main roads and finally joined the Community Fibre contract 6 months ago with Jordan – my little brother. We’ve been working together since before we joined Kelly Group and It’s great to be able to work together and deliver our assigned jobs to the highest standard.

I like working within this role because each week is different – it heavily depends on the location we are working at. On a good week, when conditions are ideal underground, we could pull in 2000-3000 metres of subduct. However, when conditions are poor underground, as a team, we need to find solutions to be able to pull those subducts through.
What makes this job enjoyable is being able to overcome challenges. Each week is eventful, as we overcome challenges, we learn new things with each subduct we pull through, which keeps this job interesting.
My training experience at Brimsdown was great. They provide you with all the necessary knowledge you need, to be able to start your career successfully. I think it is great that Kelly Group always provides the training that you need to be successful in your career and progress within the business.
Our team in the office is good as gold, whenever we need support, they are always available and do their best to help us.
Because we are a smaller project, all engineers know each other very well and we all try to help each other out.
Since I joined Kelly Group, I gained a wide range of experience and accreditations which I am proud of and the Community Fibre contract is an excellent contract to work on.”
