How long have you been working for Kelly Group?
I have been with the company for 9.5 years.
What position/s have you held throughout your tenure?
I started working as a Health and Safety Quality Environment Supervisor for Kelly Rail. Due to expansion, my existing role was split and we created a new Competence Manager position, which I was delighted to be promoted into.
What does a typical day look like?
No two days are the same in my position; I look after engineers’ competence on site ensuring they have the right training to complete their jobs.
I am also involved in the induction of new engineers, carrying out administrative HR duties, raising purchase orders for training equipment and delivering a behaviour-based safety program called “Making Safety Personal”.
Fatigue management is also an essential part of my responsibilities, which ensures that engineers do not exceed their working hours. If they agree to work extra hours, I must carry out a risk assessment before releasing them for duty to ensure the safety of all engineers on site.
What do you enjoy the most about your job?
The variety, no two days are the same and my day just flies by because I enjoy what I am doing.
What 3 words best describe your current role?
Before working for Kelly Group, what was the most unusual or interesting job you have ever had?
I worked behind the bar once, as a part-time bartender at a local football club to help my local community where sometimes we held functions – one of them had a Bollywood theme!
Shortly after my maternity leave, I decided to take a business administration course to refresh my memory. At the time, our tutor did not have any help - because I completed all exams successfully and had previous experience, I was asked to join the college’s team and became a tutor myself. I ended up teaching business administration for adult classes for 3 years.
If you could switch your job with anyone else for one week within the group, whose job would you want to experience?
I would not like to switch places with anyone because I love what I do and the challenges keep the job interesting.
What advice do you have for future Kelly Group candidates?
As with any large company, you will need time to understand how things work. If you ever need assistance, anyone will be happy to sit down and help.
What 3 words would your friends/family use to describe you?
What do you like the most about working within the business?
The people I get to work with and the challenges each day brings. I love to be involved and help others. I am keen to understand how the business works and what other people’s roles involve because there is always something new to learn from each other’s experiences.
What have you gained from working at Kelly Group?
Sense of enjoyment of coming to work.
I am delighted to be supportive of my colleagues; they find me approachable which results in me offering advice regularly.
Can you give us a fun fact that nobody knows about you?
I love doing races for charities, my last race was a 3K run for “Life for Cancer Research” before the first lockdown. I recently completed a 10 000-squats challenge for a charity fundraiser event.
Whom do you most admire?
I admire my youngest daughter the most; she was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes meaning a huge challenge to her diet and day-to-day tasks. Her positive way of thinking has never changed and she faces each day with a smile on her face.
I also admire people like Rob Burrow from the rugby community. He has recently been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). I respect them the most because they are selfless; they’re putting on a brave face while focusing on raising awareness and funds for research purposes.
