Kelly Group is delighted to provide a comprehensive Apprenticeship Scheme with our experienced in house training team on various contracts supporting Virgin Media, City Fibre and Openreach. The skills and knowledge new engineers gain will assist with their future careers within Kelly Group and the telecommunications industry.
The group’s apprentices gain up-to-date qualifications that meet the telecommunications industry requirements such as Openreach CALOMI accreditations, Virgin Media Installation Engineer accreditations, City Fibre Installation Engineer accreditations, Openreach Fibre Network Build accreditations and many more.
The group is thrilled to introduce Alan Clarke, one of Kelly Group’s apprentices who graduated earlier this year from the Unified Communications Technician Apprenticeship Scheme.
Following completion of his course, Alan was awarded a distinction and continued to work for Kelly Group as a Fibre Engineer on the City Fibre network.
“I joined Kelly Group as a Unified Telecommunications Technician Apprentice 3 years ago.
Before I joined the group, I was working within the hospitality industry and was keen to get involved in engineering.
I previously studied Mechanical Engineering at university. After many years of studies, I knew I needed to find an alternative means of learning and I found that apprenticeships are the best route for many people who prefer practical learning.
Since I always wanted to develop a career in engineering, Kelly Group’s Apprenticeship Scheme was the perfect opportunity for me to continue working while gaining new skills and industry knowledge while building a career as a Telecommunications Engineer. I did not hesitate to hand in my application. The interview process was very engaging; it included group interviews and exercises which was a great opportunity to network with future apprentices and my peers.
Throughout the scheme, we were trained on different major contracts. Usually, we would spend a couple of weeks in one of the National Training Centres then buddy up with an experienced engineer to practice what we learnt in class. Once we mastered the necessary skills, we moved onto a different contract and started the process in one of the National Training Centres again. This was a valuable process, and I can still rely on my mentors if I ever need help.
Like any other experience in life, this opportunity had its rewarding and challenging moments. The first 6 months was challenging because I needed to learn all the technical elements of the scheme. However, once I mastered these skills it was the most rewarding experience of my apprenticeship journey.
My trainers and mentors were always available to provide support, whether we were training in a classroom setting or in the field. My biggest achievement throughout the apprenticeship experience was graduating with a distinction. I was delighted with the results.
No two days are the same, which keeps this role exciting. Each job assignment has a different brief - I can complete quick residential works throughout the day or work on a big project that is split over several days. We go through stages on each job which involves pulling cables, blowing fibre, splicing, and connecting networks.
I would like to further my career and progress as much as I possibly can. I am hoping to eventually progress into a managerial role within Kelly Group allowing me to combine my passion for leadership and engineering.
I would certainly recommend completing an apprenticeship with Kelly Group. The support is outstanding throughout the entire experience. I have learnt skills that I can benefit from for the rest of my life.
My advice for future apprentices is, to be successful in this apprenticeship course you need to take your time learning all the technical elements of the course because it is fundamental to your success as a future engineer.”
