Sutton to Wimbledon (Victoria 2b Signalling Project)

Overview:

Upgrading and replacing life-expired equipment to reduce delays, increase network capacity and provide more timely and accurate information to passengers. In addition, renewal of the interlocking and external equipment with control of the interlocking areas being migrated to the new Three Bridges Rail Operating Centre.

Services Delivered:

  • Various signal foundations installed with a combination of both piles and concrete bases
  • Installation of larger foundations including power supply point (PSP), modular equipment housing (MEH) and distribution network operator (DNO) bases
  • Installation of the complete suite of signalling and telecoms location bases
  • Additional lineside civils completed by Kelly Rail’s experienced multi-skilled gangs who transitioned from site to site closing out the works to allow handover of specific sections of the project
  • Installation of three undertrack crossings using the traditional open cut method within possessions
  • Full upgrade of an existing level crossing with various civils work being undertaken in each of the four quadrants
  • Installation of road rail access points (RRAP) to improve track access across the Network

Kelly Rail also delivered all track handback and track monitoring scope across the project using in-house and highly competent engineers. The Kelly Rail team was signed off by Network Rail at the start of the works to ensure the management and implementation of the project’s Critical Rail Temperature (CRT) management plan.

Other surveys completed included a track versine survey and cloud scan for signals.

Key success factors:

Kelly Rail integrated the planning of possessions to allow for maximum outputs, including increasing resource levels to assist with programme requirements and pre-planning all material deliveries to site by preparing them off site, palletising and shrink wrapping them.

The collaborative approach was fundamental in managing design and commercial change efficiently via change request notifications (CRN’s) resulting in reduced programme impact.
