As part of the Gigabit Britain Campaign launched by the government, we currently have engineers completing CityFibre installs in 40 cities Nationwide – from Scotland to Southampton.
Kelly Group is proud to introduce Mike Silva and Emily Walker our skilled fibre engineers who are great examples of excellent engineers working on our CityFibre contract.
Mike Silva – Midlands
“I joined Kelly Group 12 months ago as a Fibre Engineer on the CityFibre contract and recently had the pleasure of stepping up as a Deputy Team Manager. Since then, if our team manager needs support, I can help, which I am really proud of. My responsibilities include monitoring absences and deligating engineers between jobs ensuring all gets completed to the highest standard, I am also a point of contact for the rest of our team if they need support with a difficult install.
I previously worked for Sky as an engineer where I built the foundation of my skills and knowledge of the trade. When I joined Kelly Group I developed my skillset further by the excelent training provided and constent work on a new fibre network.
Every house and customer is different which makes our job exciting. We could be completing cabinet works or pulling cables from the overhead or underground network – every day brings a new challenge.
I would recommend working for Kelly Group because of the great work culture and the support provided for engineers. It is also a progressive company with endless opportunities to further your career within the telecommunications industry.
My advice for future engineers is always to approach everything with an open mind and aim to complete your installation to the highest standard.
The Reward and Recognition Scheme is an excellent initiative for engineers. The team reward is a brilliant idea and an opportunity for all 20 engineer from one team to get together and socilise outside of the working enviroment.”
Emily Walker - South
“ I joined the Group in October 2021 as a Trainee Engineer and since then became a fibre engineer and a surveyor on the CityFibre contract.
I applied for the position because I had the opportunity to gain an insight into working with fibre and I immediately wanted to learn more about the trade. Before joining Kelly Group, I was a Support Worker for autistic adults so I joined with no experience working within the telecommunications industry and I developed all my skills and knowledge throughout my training journey and getting practical experience working in the field.
My training journey was an incredible experience because of the endless support from the training team ensuring I can achieve my ambitions and become a successful fibre engineer.
I suffer from Asthma which caused a little obstacle during training. We were completing exams on pole climbing when I had an Asthma attack while I was up the pole. Unfortunatelly, I didn’t have my inhaler at hand so the training team ensured I was safely removed from the pole and got my inhaler immediately. I was upset because I love climbing poles and thought this might get in the way of my career but the training team arranged for me to have another go at the exam the next day due to the special circumstances and I was delighted when I successfully passed.
They also showed outstanding support during my in-class training adjusting the written test to be dyslexia-friendly ensuring I had the opportunity to answer all questions to the best of my abilities. I completed the test on my tablet which has a special pink overlay over the screen helping me read documents and if the question was too difficult a trainer read it out loud making sure I can answer it according to my knowledge.
I am proud to be a fibre engineer who can also complete surveys. At the moment, I support the CityFibre contract by surveying those residential properties where customers would like to be connected to CityFibre’s full-fibre network. First I need to find out if the network is accessible from the property then identify if they have access to the network from either an underground or aerial source. I also need to ensure, the network is well connected and live before the installation team is scheduled to complete the job.
What I enjoy the most about being a fibre engineer is the variety of tasks, my favourites are climbing the poles, the whole internal installation method and blowing the fibre with the fibre gun. I find working with fibre calming because it requires your full attention.
I strive to be the best engineer I possibly can be and continuously practice technical skills. After finding out my application was successful, I built a little wall from cement and bricks in my garden to practice drilling through them.”
