North West Electrification Project

The North West Electrification programme (NWEP) electrified key routes to improve capacity, providing better and eco-friendly services and revolutionising rail transport through reduced journey times between key cities in the North of England. It has brought communities closer together and provided a vital catalyst to enhance the regional economy.

Kelly Rail was involved in delivering Phase 4-5 of NWEP which electrified the railway network at 25kV AC overhead between Miles Platting and Manchester Victoria.

Services Delivered:

Working in collaboration with several supply chain members and Network Rail, Kelly Rail delivered the ancillary civils scope associated with telecoms and power works, providing construction, installation, testing and termination services.

During the 38-month programme, Kelly Rail delivered:

  • New fibre cables
  • Fibre joints, testing and installation of STAKKAbox systems and return screen conductor (RSC) joints
  • New RSC cables
  • New spider plates
  • GRP OLE mast screening
  • High voltage (HV) cable route
  • CMS Ground Troughing
  • Buried ducting
  • Under track crossing chambers (UTX) turning chambers
  • GRP fencing
  • Provision of trial hole gangs for OLE
  • Armco fencing

Key success factors:

Working to approved for construction (AfC) drawings and designs, Kelly Rail successfully installed all works to plan and was commended for the quality of the workmanship and efficient delivery.

Kelly Rail carried out the majority of high-risk works, including the deep UTX turning chamber installation which involved the temporary works design and the high-level GRC screening works all of which were completed without any safety issue.
