Emergency Roadside
Telephones

Background

The UK Highways Agency awarded a contract to replace all the existing ERTs (Emergency Roadside Telephones) with the next generation 354 variant ERT on a national basis in more than 6,000 locations.

Scope of Work

Kelly’s role under the contract entailed a number of works which included decommissioning the existing type 352 ERT; civil enabling works to facilitate the new installations; ducting and cabling installation, and installing the new variant unit type 354 ERT.

We carried out commissioning of the installed unit type 354; provided traffic management services for the project, and booked road space through the Highway Agency managing agents and TTROs. We forecast and requisitioned stock. And managed the web based real-time installation database to update the client of the project’s progress.

Key success factors and innovations

  • The web based real time database introduced by Kelly Group enabled the Highways Agency, Serco and Atkins (the Highways Agency’s Consultant) to openly review progress of the works and monitor quality remotely
  • Kelly Group built collaborative relationships with all parties to avoid duplication of activities and resource.
  • Proactive work scheduling resulted in continuity of work with alternative site availability to cover for work cancellations.
  • Kelly Group were able to mobilise quickly to respond to service calls for road traffic collision incidents.
